Attack of Miley

I've never been a fan or nonfan of Miley Cyrus or her alter ego Hannah Montana. But, as of late Ms. Miley is everywhere.

Minding my business watching television and I find myself engrossed in a preview for the new Hannah Montana movie. My new Glamour magazine has none other than Miley splashed across the cover all agrin with fabulous flowing hair.

So, I've decided to be a fan. I think at the age of 16 she's probably making a lot better life choices than some people twice her age. And, perhaps more importantly for our purposes of fashion and fabulous styling, she has been looking killer lately.

Exhibit A: A fierce combo of a Alberta Ferretti fringe dress and tough jacket.

Exhibit B: A lush grecian one-shoulder by Monique Lhuillier is all grown up and yet totally works.

Scrub so good you can just scrub your nose in it

As a naturally oily gal I'm always on the hunt for a great exfoliator. I found a new one I'm really enjoying from Soap & Glory. (I'm not going to lie the cute packaging sucked me in.)

New boutique swings their door WIDE open

Race with FACE

Race for the Cure was an amazing event. A record number of participants showed their support (try 9,000-plus!) by walking/running a 5K in downtown Lafayette.

Thousands of women across Acadiana came out to fight breast cancer. It was truly moving.

Valentino rocked a subtle nude and a striking red in the same collection.

A Givenchy dress with draping and florals remains racy.

Elie Saab's show stopping black gown is Oscar winner worthy.

Armani's red asymmetrical gown would rock the red carpet as would the shimmering nude.

A flowing Alexis Mabille gown would be beautiful with another bold hue for accesories.

Couture offers fashion's grandest houses to show their grandest ideas and in a time like this a fantastical escape is just what the economist ordered.

Perhaps my favorite of the all was Elie Saab with a delicious array of super soft shades luscious draping and folds that seemed to never end.

Among several of the collections were dresses that will surely make the Best Dressed list for movie premieres and serious red carpet action like the Oscars.

What a gem

In stark contrast to white dresses, there were plenty of ladies at the SAGs in jewel-hued gowns.

From emerald to ruby and everything in between, there were only a few subtle shades on the carpet and the ones that were there – well they paled in comparison to these rich, bold tones.

Rachel Evan Woods did a gorgeous blue and kept the jewel theme with amethyst accessories.

Claire Danes rocked an almost-messy fluttering ruby gown while Christina Applegate's emerald also kept things messy and chic.

Amy Adams looked a bit more buttoned-up in a rich purple dress with satiny details.

Snow White at the SAGs

The SAGs were a sea of white tonight with a bevy of beauties donning the purest shade of all.

While white can look a little bridal when it comes to formal wear, all of these women pulled together all-white looks that were anything but wedding day appropriate.

Anne Hathaway's Grecian gown with jewel embellishment was one of the best in white and nearly one of the best of the night.

Jennifer Morrison brought a fresh, almost boho vibe with her strapless dress. While Rosario Dawson rocked a super glam silky dress that screamed Old Hollywood.

My favorite was Teri Hatcher's one-shoulder gown with a super skinny belt and dramatic folds.

In the nude

Spring's go-to shoe promises to be virtually unseen and that's the point. The newest hue to hit footwear is the nude.

It's a great addition to any wardrobe, especially one that is heavy on skirts and dresses. Nude shoes promise to lengthen legs unlike colored varieties that cut the appearance of legs short.

Hair & the City

Ah, The City. It's my new (sorta) favorite show if for no other reason than a vast majority of the show takes place within the hallowed halls of DVF. But, the real reason to tune in each week is the clothes and the hair, oh the hair.

The three main gals on the show have killer manes. (Love Erin's bangs.) But, the object of my affection for this little entry are the wavy middle parts Olivia and Whitney rock each week.

They both have the perfect not totally flat, flat hair, which is hard to accomplish. So kudos ladies. I'm still trying to master it myself. I should probably start with putting down the teasing comb and Big Sexy Hair Spray.

White hot at the Globes

Eva Mendes was my best dressed choice for the 2009 Golden Globes. Her white Dior gown was flawless – both cutting edge and timeless, which is a rare combo.

Her side-swept hair is spot on. But, the kicker for me is the surprising choice of jewelry. Her offbeat turquoise jewelry creates a fashion forward ensemble that was unbeatable for the night.

Mermaid shapes make a splash

Mermaids took to land Sunday night during the Golden Globes with dresses that upped the sex appeal.

Eva Longoria kept it sophisticated with a sleek ruby red dress and hair to match.

Kate Beckinsale's super svelte figure looked flawless in a white mermaid gown and she kept the hair simple as well. After all, these mermaid shapes are bold enough without any added drama.

I'm a lover of menswear-inspired looks and as of late a bevy of Hollywood ladies have shown that the men's club can be totally feminine and seriously sexy.

Anne Hathaway and Katherine Heigl looked edgy thanks to the addition of skinny pants to the classic suit. Kate Beckinsale was super sexy with her silky top and Molly Sims was memorable with her red jacket-inspired dress.

There are trends that give me a Rachel Zoe "I die" moment and the men's watch on a woman is one of them.

There is something very chic about a dainty dame with a clunky gold watch. But, like all trends you aren't supposed to just grab your boyfriend's old timepiece. Instead find one of a million women's watches that are supposed to look like men's. But, of course, no self respecting man would wear one of these watches.

If you're one of those ladies with a knack for style, you can easily borrow a man's watch and get the look. Pair the big watch with super classic prepster attire – think a pair of sleek trousers and a snug button up top – and uber feminine makeup and hair.

The Country Music Awards brought out Nashville's brightest stars in frocks that were anything but country.

The three truly chic looks of the night came from crossover star Jewel, teen queen Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Nettles (and two of those were Roberto Cavalli).

Miley's Cavalli dress is fresh and young and at one sophisticated without looking like she's playing dress up.

A simple navy Cavalli dress is pure class on Jewel.

Jennifer Nettles dress is a dreamy white with a shape and details that have a boho vibe while remaining polished.

It's a great way to give an outfit that country casual vibe while remaining polished. I have a silk top in red and black in such a check print and love it with a slouchy cardigan.

I've always been a bit skeptical of lip plumpers and I've also never been a fan of something that causes even the least bit of sting. Then I finally tried Buxom from Bare Escentuals.

It's officially my new favorite lip gloss, which is hard to achieve.

It's great when used with MAC's lip gloss liner. I'm in love with Buxom in Trixie and liner in Pink Edge.

The perfect day to night

Tis the season of events. Beginning in November it seems there's always some kind of after work gathering and what's a girl to wear when she doesn't have time to change after work?

Victoria Beckham's vest combo is a great day to night look. For a day look keep the shirt all buttoned up with the sleeves down and the vest open. Wear a pair of sensible shoes and basic jewelry.

For an evening roll up the sleeves, pop the collar, undo several buttons and button up the vest. Don a pair of serious shoes – think super tall patent, animal print or a surprising color like red or purple.

I'm always on the quest for the perfect face soap. And I have tried about a million.

My issue? I tend to have oily skin, which can breakout if I don't really get the grime. But, simultaneously, am fast approaching 3-0 and want to prevent the first signs of aging.

I've also been on an organic kick, which is why I was thrilled when I came across Organique . (Check out the October issue of FACE for more info about this Lafayette business and their fabulous products.)

The peppermint soap is THE BEST for my face. It keeps my breakouts at bay while not drying me out. And the bonus is that it's fantastic for the entire body.

The essential transition piece

As the first subtle chills of fall show up each year I peruse my closet perplexed by what I wore last year.

My closet never seems to have anything worthy of wearing from last year and I'm still in love with my summer frocks. Enter the perf transitional piece – the blazer.

Vanessa and Ashley pull off the look without looking like they simply misplaced part of a business suit. The shape is key and both of these girls hit the nail on the head.

Vanessa is a great example of the traditional almost 80s blazer that's a bit sharp. Roll up the sleeves to make the look more relaxed.

Ashley shows off a tuxedo-inspired jacket, which works thanks to a rocker belt and bracelet that are studded out.

The Carrie shoe

Carrie rocks a higher priced pair.

So Sex and the City: The Movie might feel like old news. But, Carrie's gladiators are far from out of the fashion headlines.

All things gladiator-inspired continue to be hot, which is why I was thrilled to find her killer heels redone by Steve Madden, which means a price point even us unpublished fashion lovers can afford.

These heels can work with a flirty floral dress or a more severe structured look. When cooler weather arrives try them with opaque tights in a surprising hue.

The perfect combination

I can't get enough of combinations that are unexpected, contrasting and bold. To that end, I became a bit of a Vanessa Hudgens fan (although I've never actually seen High School Musical) when I saw her spot on fashion combo.

Everything about this look works. A flirty dress with tulle peeping out, a rough motorcycle jacket with an abbreviated length and wicked heels with double ankle straps.

A long earring and hair away from her face are a great compliment.

Gucci, gucci aaaah

Gucci rocked Milan with a Ready-to-Wear collection that flowed with silk and a luscious color palette.

Low slung belts with abbreviated lengths equaled sexy/effortless.

The more formal pieces were a study in fluid sophistication with draping silks and soft lines. They are the kind of dresses that could go with flat gladiators or mile high sexy strappy footwear.

Military jackets get a salute

I am a lover of the jacket and perhaps my favorite is the military-inspired and rivaled by that is the 70 rocker jacket.

To my delight, both can be found at Balmain's show in Paris. While I'm not quite in love with the jeans that are so distressed they might have been worn to a New Kids concert, the look does work. I'd be more likely to do the embellished black pants.

There are things I love, things I adore and then there are those fashion items that go one step further. These are the ones I covet. And in during Fashion Week in Paris Balmain delivered a whole bevy of covet-worthy items.

In fact, there are so many that I'm going to have to divide them into three categories: the jacket, the fabulous dress and the high drama fancy dance fabulous dress.

The green and pink that wove throughout the collection were so rich and pitch perfect I could hardly stand it. And the asymmetrical lines are divine, especially in combination with the strips of fabric that are like the most glamazon of bandaids. The spiderweb of shimmer running through some of the dresses and the beaded embellishments are the touch that will keep me dreaming of these dresses.

Gladiator for fall

It's (nearly) time to put away those wafer-thin gladiator sandals, but don't say goodbye to the Roman coliseum attire quite yet.

Fall promises more gladiator sandals and this time they are mile high and a bit more hearty. I can't get enough of the Chinese Laundry pictured above. (Find them at Brother's on the Boulevard)

These sandals pair great with super skinny dark jeans, a floaty floral dress, a little something Grecian or a pair of bright opaque tights.

Practical Prada

Prada's fall collection in demure lace.

Take inspiration from the Prada look with this black lace dress and peep-toes.

In the spring Prada gave a show for fall looks that was drenched in lace and layered shoes.

It's a look that can be hard to pull off both financially and style wise, which is why I've given you some easy pieces that have some of the panache of Prada's signature looks that promise to be popular this fall.

Full lace is the order of the day. If you're going to really do it ... go neck to knee in lace. Black, navy, camel, chocolate are the best colors. Anything other than neutral can quickly turn tawdry when done in liberal amounts.

Emmy 2008 best dressed

There were a plethora of Hollywood starlets and long time celebs who blew out the red carpet for the Emmys. So many people got it right for this event, it's hard to pick one.

It was hard to pick three. And while I won't commit that these ladies are the abSOlute best dressed – they are three standouts in my book.

Brooke Shields proves that like a fine wine women can get better with time. The choice of bold color and unashamedly feminine excess in the form of rows of ruffles was a show stopper.

Heidi Klum is flawless. Enough said. Her shimmering gown was timeless.

Vanessa Williams is further proof that with age can come great beauty – and wisdom. Her dress was a pitch perfect pick that stayed appropriate for a warm September evening, but paid tribute to one of fall's hottest trends – the fall floral.

Grecian goddesses

The flapper girl

If you're looking for a way to take the suit to the feminine side just add pink.

In both New York and London Fashion Week showings, two different designers brought vibrant pink to the suit for a look that is at once up-to-date and a bit 1980's.

The key to looking more chic and less Golden Girl's cast member is to keep the shape sharp and the color fresh and bold.

Ombre is great now for accessories (as featured in September's issue of FACE Magazine) and this fall promises to be a must have when pulling off all things effortless and boho.

Claire Danes (in Zac Posen) rocks a unique use of ombre (fading or degrading color) while Herve Leger and Naeem Khan rock it on the runway in their Spring Collections.

Danes, Naeem Khan and Herver Leger are proof that the almost trippy ombre we now know and love can easily go polished and chic thanks to innovation in design and shape.

This fall keep your eyes peeled for patent ombre shoes.

The R's have it

Gleaming gold pants at Rodarte are spot on.

Rag & Bone perfects the Friday night look (left) and the cas Saturday ensemble (right).

Rock & Republic is black and white and fabulous all over. Edgy feminine with masculine influence is Saturday night hot.

In poring over the Fashion Week photos from New York the folks at Rock & Republic, Rodarte and Rag & Bone certainly got it right.

Rodarte's golden ensemble is a beautiful color of warmth and shimmer and feature what is likely to be v hot this year: skin tight gleaming pants.

Rock & Republic screams chic on a Saturday night with a few pieces that could actually go to work. Ruffle-embellished tops are sure to be fierce from fall through the spring. Skinny pants will be a got to have shape. A short black gleaming dress is seasonless.

And Rag & Bone does the easy Saturday look with a slouchy blazer and jean skirt while doing the Friday night rocker chic thing with leopard pants and a one shoulder.

I've purchased but a handful of fall items and I'm already geared up for spring!

Few events are as thrilling as Fashion Week. And while we are miles and months away from wearing the spring looks revealed in New York recently, we've gotta take a good look at what's to come.

Three colors struck me as recurring through several lines: varying shades of coral, silvers and grays and yellows.

So much tragedy at the VMAs

At the risk of sounding like a Mamaw, what are these kids thinking at the VMAs?

MTV's Video Music Awards equal fabulous red carpet action thanks to the rock and roll/hip hop vibe that can marry beautifully with haute couture.

That was not the case in 2008. It was a bit more Dancing with the Stars costumes meets 1980's figure skating outfits. And the cleavage? Oh my. Terrifyingly low was the cut of the evening.

To that end, I have two celebs on display who got it right Monday night. Shockingly, Paris Hilton, who often is a display of the tawdry, looked the part of the lady. And Miley Cyrus, while still looking edgy and youthful, managed to make a more mature move than many of her older VMA goers.

In fashion one thing is certain – you never know who will pull it off ... and who won't.

I heart NYC

I recently headed to New York for my first trip ever to the Big Apple.

It was fabulous.

The experience left me inspired for fall's newest looks (nothing beats a window display on 5th Avenue).

As the leaves turn (I swear they eventually do even in south south Louisiana), look for a lot of purple, pants in every fit and flare (super skinny, mega flared, wide leg, high-waisted and super low) and lots of jackets.

Word on the street is that the jacket will be this season's dress. In other words, all things will revolve around the jacket. I've seen a lot of leopard from shiny satin trenches to abbreviated furs. And if your looking for some extra drama in the jacket look for a voluminous collar.

Lo's sweet side-swept hair

Just as I was beginning to wonder what Lo is contributing to The Hills (other than creating some drama for mellow Audrina), she worked a great hair do.

Her side bun reminded me of a chic update to the Princess Lea buns. It totally works. Paired with a dress that has some silver sparkle and ruby red lips, it was a great old Hollywood glam look.

Good job Lo, now just back off Audrina and we'll all be happy.

I love the 80's

In case you needed more evidence that the 80s are hot right now, I submit Exhibit A: Leona Lewis at the Olympic closing ceremonies.

Leona rocked a tin foil silver dress with a shape that reminded me of the days when Debbie Gibson was entering the scene.

I'm definitely looking toward some 1980's inspiration this fall with unusually bright colors (fuchsia for fall is the word on the street) and those signature 1980's shapes including my favorite – leggings.

As long as the cloud bangs remain restricted to photo albums, we're safe from repeating some serious fashion and beauty crimes.

I'll be the first to admit that The Hills is likely contrived and if I'm really honest fairly uneventful.

But, I'm hooked. It's the music. Those shots that pan out over sunny Hollywood. The waiting to see what the evil blonde duo of Heidi and Spencer will do next. The clothes. The hair. The glowy skin.

The girls are a great gauge of what's going to be wearable in fashion. I love Whitney's bracelet pictured above. The easy-going hair on all three girls is a must have. And the vibrant turquoise is a great summer color that promises to wear well into the fall. (Word on the street is that a deep turquoise is going to be a hot fall color in Lafayette.)

That being said, the season 4 premier delivered some of the expected: rude Spencer, clueless Heidi, mildly rude Lo, Audrina kindof into Justin Bobby. And some unexpected: Lauren actually dating someone.

So, whether anything actually happens or not on The Hills I know I'll be watching.

Hats on

I would love to say that I'm a hat person. I try to be. I just don't always have the nerve to rock a hat in broad day light.

But, as we start to look at cooler temperatures, I'm determined to get my hat on. To that end, I've been checking out fedoras.

I like the look with a contrasting ensemble like Ashley Simpson's silky dress and hat. And I love the fedora with a menswear inspired look. Victoria Beckam pulls it off splendidly.

I'm determined to wear a fedora this fall with my favorite accessory – a menswear inspired vest.

The Material One turned 50 August 16 and all I can say is "wow."

Whether you love her, hate her or are indifferent – Madonna is beyond fierce at 50.

Her thighs alone give us all great hope.

I have pictured above some of my favorite Madonna moments. I've never considered myself much of a Madonna fan, but I can greatly appreciate a woman that can reinvent herself again and again.

A woman, who at 50, looks fresher than the vast majority of Hollywood's youngest pop stars has to be doing something right.

Going organic head to toe

I have officially jumped on the organic band wagon. I look for the products everywhere now, which is probably what drew my eye to my favorite new body scrub.

The Healing Garden's Organic Collection in Wild Honey includes a scrub that is anything but sticky sweet in texture and everything subtly sweet in smell.

I am finicky about the smell of anything that goes on my body (no popsicle-flavored body lotions or uber sweet glosses for me) and this fragrance is a barely-there scent that's at once refreshing and warm.

The sugar is pretty coarse and the rich oil separates out in the jar, so stir thoroughly before use. It only requires a small amount slathered head to toe to leave skin both refreshed and extremely hydrated.

It's the perfect pre-faux tan treatment. No need for lotion after using this exfoliator.

Fierce boots

Sweaters and tights and Uggs, oh my! We are months from working a look like this, but it's never to early to start stockpiling pieces for the fall.

As we swelter in the August Louisiana heat, it may be hard to think of cooler days that include boots. But, if you're anything like me you are already trying to decide which boot look (or two) you will invest in this fall.

A girly cowboy?
A basic riding?
A good ole fuzzy Ugg?
A vampy stiletto?

If you're itching to buy a pair, I'm happy to report three stores that already have some boots.

Shoe Fits has some Uggs great for that cozy, effortless look.

Brother's on the Boulevard has some Old Gringo boots that you could wear now with the right skirt and into the fall with jeans. (My favorite are the worn-in leoparditos, which you have to see to appreciate.)

Shoe La La has a great cowboy-esque boot and a fabulous pair of suede Carlos Santana boots that I'm itching to wear this fall with a floral dress and vest.

If you decide to get a jump start on your boot purchasing, feel free to pair them with a roughed up jean skirt for a complementary look or try a feminine barely there dress for a great contrast to cowboy or motorcycle boots.

Trends that never grow old

There are few trends that never grow old for me and among those few the one-shoulder dress reigns supreme.

My two favorite incarnations are the very Grecian (top right) and the leggy thick-belted variety (bottom left).

The bold blue-purple dress Blake Lively is wearing (word on the street in Lafayette is that bold blue will continue to be hot into the fall) is perfection with a super thick belt. Nothing beats a slick black patent belt cinching a bold hue. Classic pointy black pumps are always a great finish for the feet.

The white Romanesque ensemble Maria Bello is rocking is another simple yet bold take on the one-shoulder. To pull off the Grecian look from head to toe try the following elements:
Soft swept back hair
A dress that hits below the knee
Gladiator sandals
A soft color inspired by nature or white or ivory
Fabrics that drape or flow (silk, satin, chiffon or a super thin jersey)
Thick and bold cuff bracelets

FYI: Belle Amie has several one shoulder dresses right now that can go casual with flat gladiators and into the night with heels and a clutch.

My jury is still out on 'country' Jessica

Jessica Simpson as country music star. Not so sure about it. I'm not a Jessica Simpson hater (or lover).

I like her sense of style at times (although I find the frequent excess cleavage a bit tiring at times). And I love her line of shoes (I wore a pair of them today that are fantastic).

But, pop star gone country? I'm not entirely sold on the notion. To me, good country (and I'm not a big country fan so take any opinions on the genre for what their worth) requires some grit and some kind of yearning that pushes you to that genre as your #1 pick. But, I'm sure far greater analysts have determined it to be a smart move for Jessica.

I hope she pulls it off because if the photos of Elle's new issue are any indication she's teetering on the edge of looking less country legend and more "Country- Cool Barbie." It's a bit artificial. But, she is a Texan and has every right to dip her toe into the country pond.

And if her newest projects mean the continuing popularity of cowboy boots with everything and brings back turquoise jewelry, I'm in.

Wrap it up

Few accessories are as versatile as a scarf (as columnist Kiley Brown shared in a previous issue of FACE). And I do love a good scarf – although in these hot summer months it's hard to put anything around my neck other than a cool towel.

But, I am tempted to risk the neck sweat for the look Diane Kruger is working in the picture above.

One of my favorite things to do is to discover a new a way to turn a regular T-shirt into a chic look with a few pieces (usually a vest and too many necklaces) and clearly this hippie-inspired scarf takes a fitted tee from boring to boho in an instant.

Guess I'll just have to find one made of an airy fabric and risk the warm neck.

Spanx move north

Today I learned that the famed booty smoother Spanx is conquering another region of the female landscape with a new bra.

While visiting Brother's on the Boulevard this afternoon, I found the newest incarnation of Spanx – the Bra-llelujah! Full Coverage Front Closure Bra.

Like the panties from Spanx that work to smooth the bumps of the bottom while remaining invisible, the new bra gives a smooth look under tops. The front closure means the back is free to be one long piece of stretchy fabric made to refrain from riding up and to minimize that dreaded back fat.

I have yet to test drive the new model, but if looks are any indicator and based on the reputation of Spanx panties, I'd say give this bra a try.

A Golden Girl passes away

Estelle Getty died today at the age of 84. I loved her. I love the Golden Girls. I always kind of thought of them as the Sex and the City: Seniors gone wild in Florida edition.

Before there was Sex and the City, my friends and I would compare ourselves to this dynamic foursome – we also did it with Designing Women as well. (I was always Dorothy, which both insulted and complimented me I think.)

It is a sad day indeed. I still catch the reruns of the show and can't help but laugh out loud. And I always marvel at how edgy some of the topics really were, especially for a group of older women.

I'm about to hit search on my DVR to find an episode to watch tonight in honor of Sophia.

A beauty we love to love

After watching The Dark Knight this weekend I decided to crown Maggie Gyllenhaal the thinking woman's beauty queen.
There are beautiful women we love to hate (Denise Richards) and then the ones we love in spite of our own jealousy like Maggie. (Her ridiculously precious brother doesn't hurt either.)

The movie was pretty fantastic (much better than Batman Begins, which I watched for the first time shortly thereafter watching Knight).

I have pictured above a movie still from Knight where Maggie is wearing one of my favorite wardrobe pieces – a vest. She rocks it with a trouser and button up top. A great reminder that a masculine piece can look superbly sexy.

The other photo is of her and Dark Knight love interest Aaron Eckhart at a fundraiser. Her flutter-sleeve dress and soft, low updo are soft, sexy and old school glam.

Belt it

I am a huge fan of belts and admit that I don't wear them nearly often enough. Watching the ESPYS (against my will) last night I was inspired by the use of belts in some ensembles that may seem unlikely paired with a waist cincher.

I love Sofia Bush's utility-inspired belt contrasting her grecian gown. Danica Patrick's yellow reptile belt is fabulous with her charcoal dress. She finishes the look with some yellow pumps, which for me are the new red. And then there is the gorgeous Adriana Lima (one of my favorite models) in her little black dress with belt and fierce shoes.

FYI, besides the fashion, the awards were certainly worthwhile thanks to Justin Timberlake's superb hosting skills. (And of course any event David Beckham attends is worth at least a glance.)

Lucky Magazine (truly a favorite in my list of favorite fashion magazines) has Leighton Meester on the cover this month looking free, fresh and vibrant. It's a fantastic contrast to her uptight Blair on Gossip Girl.

I know I'm too old for Gossip Girl. I can't help it. It's my guilty pleasure. But, before you judge, I recommend you check out a few episodes. And if you love fashion like me you'll find it worth the watch to see what duds these little fashionistas are going to don next. (It really is extraordinary that an NYC Upper East Side prep school has such a liberal dress code. Who knew plaid could look so fierce?)

The show is a delicious look at New York and fashion with a sexy edge. Think of it as Sex and the City: Juniors Edition.

Grüezi to Project Runway! (that's hello in German)

As a lover of fashion it is only natural that I love Project Runway with all my heart (or at least a nice little chunk of it).

The Season 5 premiere is but a day away and I am waiting with bated breath to see what this new crop of designers have to offer, the input of the fabulous panel of guest judges (some real legends this season – Brooke Shields, Diane von Fürstenberg, Cynthia Rowley and Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa) and of course Heidi in all her gorgeous German goddessness. (See picture above if there's any doubt that Heidi has lost any of her luster.)

Perhaps my favorite thing about Project Runway (aside from Heidi's precious comments like "that looks home sewn") is how inspired I am by the show. Within the first few episodes my designer within starts to rear her odd little head. I start saying fierce more often and pair strange items together in the name of upping my fashion quotient.

Maybe this season I'll actually take my sewing machine out of the closet.

When the swan outdoes herself

Anne Hathaway is one of those Hollywood "ugly ducklings" who was always a swan in my opinion – even in the first part of Princess Diaries. But, now this swan has turned into ... what's hotter than a swan?

I saw her kick some butt last week in Get Smart. It was very Jennifer Garner in Alias. Then I picked up In Style with her on the cover. She has one of those great Old Hollywood faces that can pull off matte red lips, of which I am always jealous.

Watching Hathaway go from ugly duckling in Princess Diaries to swan was a treat. And she pulled off that same feat again in The Devil Wears Prada. In Get Smart she was fierce swan from beginning to end.

I wonder if we'll ever see the ugly duckling again or has she permanently transformed?

More FACE

Hello readers! As the July 4th weekend winds down, I hope you grab an issue of FACE July and check out some beautiful fashion and inspiring women.

So, this second issue didn't include a big launch party like the inaugural issue. But, that didn't make it any less thrilling to see it in print. Or any less special. It must be because, once again, I was able to share the story of an incredible Lafayette woman. That's something that is to always be treasured.

There may not have been a public celebration, but there certainly was one in my head and heart.

I said yes to carrots

I've been walking by the Yes to Carrots display at Walgreen's for awhile now and wondering what these orange-label, carrot-related products do exactly. Last week I finally bought their C the Body Carrot Rich Moisturizing Body Scrub.

It is fantastic. Made with organic carrot juice and Dead Sea mud, this is the first body exfoliator I can remember leaving my skin so very moisturized that I didn't need lotion (even after shaving my legs).

Beware: It's so moisturizing that it leaves a bit of residue around the tub. Luckily it comes off easily.

It's an easy product to use and has a pleasant smell. Just scrub for 3 minutes, three times a week with this stuff.

It looks like a great exfoliator for my pre-self-tanning ritual. I have yet to try out this theory. I'll keep you posted when I do. Until then, if you're looking for a good way to slough off that dead skin and not feel parched, say yes to carrots.

In the pursuit of big(ger) hair

The summer months can be trying for a woman (like me) who digs some big hair. I use volumizing shampoo and conditioner, I blow out my hair each day using a thickening spray and then I spray the crap out of it with Big Sexy hair spray.

But, there are times when I just can't get enough texture (without a painful amount of back comb action) and I find that a lot of products that give me that texture weight my hair down. I was thrilled to discover a texture spray at Jody's Salon in Lafayette that was totally news to me – White Sands Liquid Texture.

Bonus: It also smoothes those fly away hairs that tend to crop up at the worst times.

It's also a humidity fighter and unlike most spray-on products, it leaves your hair soft and not crunchy. Hair that's big and soft? Maybe I'll give my teasing comb a vacation – or at least a few days off.

Polish for the nonpolisher

Nail upkeep is kind of the bane of my existence. I have to admit that I do naturally have some hearty fingernails that grow quite well.

Keeping them filed and polished can be a bit of a job. And then there are the toe nails. I hate giving myself a pedicure and with the excessively pointed, high heels shoes I often wear paint tends to chip away all too quickly. At this point you may be wondering why I don't just get a manicure or pedicure. I am my mother's daughter in this area – why pay for someone else to do it when I can do it myself.

And so, here I am with often half-painted nails. All of that is to say that I have discovered a new polish that makes painting my nails a bit easier, especially the toe nails.

Nicole by OPI makes a new product called Nic's Sticks. Pump, paint and go. They dry quickly, are easy to apply and more importantly make it impossible for me to knock over a bottle of polish.

Bonus: The OPI website has an interactive tool that let's you choose a polish color using your skin tone and nail length.
The shade I've been using Are We There Yet? is a sheer pink color that remains neutral and has just enough color for the summer months.

Royal indeed

Sarah Berthelot, Lady of the Year, and Melanie Martin, Woman of the Year, show off their roaring looks at the Queen's Gala.

Saturday night was the Queen's Gala to benefit Faith House, of which FACE was a sponsor, and I have to ask could there be a better cause?

Don't answer that. I know in Lafayette there truly are numerous very worthy causes, which explains the crazy long list of causes that the Woman of the Year – Melanie Martin – and Lady of the Year – Sarah Berthelot – are involved in across Acadiana.

Saturday night's event included a silent auction. (Why, oh why, didn't I bid on that splendid Marilyn Monroe painting?) And some fabulous flapper attire in line with this year's 1920's theme.

Sarah's dress, which was converted from a not-so-roaring-20's-frock, to something straight from a speak easy included a matching hat with feathers. I am firm believer that it's hard to go wrong with feathers.

Melanie donned a 20's inspired ensemble as well, the highlight of which (in my opinion) was a vintage hat.

A worthwhile cause + costumes = a fabulous time.

Tan in a pinch

Per my previous post, you may already know that I am on a constant quest for products that will disguise my God-given fair skin.

I love self-tanners, bronzers and the like. To that end, I have to share a new discovery in the world of bronzers - Glominerals all over Body Bronzer.

I was at Ashero Spa recently where a friendly employee slathered a bit of the fluid on my left arm. It dried in an instant and left a rosy tan with a beautiful shimmer. (For those who want more shimmer and less color they have a lighter shade as well.)

Flash to later that night and the bronzer – which requires soap and water for removal – was still going strong despite a humid day that included a bit of sweating. If you've ever used a body bronzer that comes off with water, you know that one bead of sweat, one little rain drop can leave your legs in a state of frightening leopard spots.

There are few things less sexy than a woman with polka dot legs.

Travel proof hats

A travel worthy Eric Javits hat. Add beautiful sunglasses and hit the sand.

At a recent fashion show in Lafayette models in swimsuits donned floppy hats with their bikinis for a look that was quite refined for swimwear. It was a great reminder of how a simple accessory can take a look from average to chic in an instant.

I headed home that evening to find my wide brim straw hat. To my dismay, it was as crumpled as it was last August when I unpacked it from a trip to Tahiti. I was sure that my sad, disfigured hat would have taken shape again after months on a shelf. I was wrong.

You can imagine my delight then when on a recent trip to La Mode Shoes, I learned of a travel proof hat. The Eric Javits hats (and handbags) are made of a material called Squishee, which is basically crush proof. And while these woven items have the essence of straw they are far more durable. If I can survive three connecting flights and 24 hours of travel time, I expect my hat to do the same.

FACE it Lafayette

We had a great turnout and a bevy of women looking fabulous. The standout look of the night was black and white polka dots with women wearing them in every size of dot.

Sex and the City finally arrives

Friday night I pinned on a new giant, flower corsage in honor of my favorite single gal (Carrie Bradshaw, of course) and headed to a Sex and the City soiree for the opening of the movie.

The film did not disappoint. Not to worry, there are no spoiler alerts in this post. First, I am not the best movie reviewer. And secondly, giving away the plot of a movie as precious as this is like telling someone their Christmas present before the big day.

The four ladies totally delivered. Their four years away treated them well. The plot was fantastic. The men were more attractive this go around. Jennifer Hudson. Spot on.

And the clothes. Oh, how they shone! The film bombards you with look after look. It was a lot to take in (especially from row five in the theater) and I'll be heading back to the movie to further dissect the fashion. How does costume designer extraordinaire Patricia Field pull it off? Her picks are flawless.

Thanks to Field, I am officially buying a belt for every outfit. (Or at least a few.)

If you love the women of Sex and the City, check them out on the big screen. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll remember why you watch the same episodes over and over again on TBS now. And chances are, you'll come away inspired to kick it up a notch in the fashion department and call the fabulous women in your life who you can depend on to tell you when your panty hose have a run and buy you a Cosmo when you've been stoop up.

Glutton for "Sex and the City"

The fabulous foursome looking like the goddesses they are at the "Sex and the City: The Movie" premiere in NYC.

I officially can't get enough "Sex and the City". And thanks to the recent onslaught of 'Sex' commercials, products, previews and general hoopla I am fairly close to getting my fill as Friday approaches when "Sex and the City: The Movie" hits theaters. In the words of writer-director Michael Patrick King the movie has gone beyond buzz. He describes the growing enthusiasm for SATC as a "frenzy of fabulous." Indeed.

But, I have to wonder (as I type on my Mac more than 1,240 miles from NYC) ... Why do women like me (who don't own a pair of Manolos and wouldn't know how to get from Prada to the Magnolia Bakery if my shoe collection depended on it) feel so connected to "Sex and the City?"

It could be we're all fashion obsessed. It could be we love to hear the torrid details of the dynamic foursome's lives. Two words: Chris Noth. But, I believe our connection to 'Sex' is much deeper than the Cosmos and Choos. Evidence: The number of people who have the results of their personal Sex and the City character quiz on their social networking pages.

Everyone has a redeeming quality they connect to one of the characters. You're honest like Miranda. Maybe hopeful like Charlotte. Unashamed like Samantha. The nucleus of your group like Carrie. But, more important than the good, the characters of 'Sex' show us the messy, flawed vulnerable parts of us are more than acceptable. Watching them is a reminder the chinks in our armor are what make us so strong.

So cheers 'Sex' fans. Dust off your tutu. Grab your favorite clutch. We are less than 48 hours from the return of "Sex and the City!"

Sunless tans

Hello my name is Amanda and I am addicted to self tanners. I was not blessed with any sort of skin pigment (unless you count freckles that rear their ugly little heads this time of year). But, all is not lost. I have discovered the benefits of faux tanning products.

I'm like Goldilocks when it comes to sunless tanning products. This one is too light. That one is too dark. This one has an odd odor. That one is too greasy. With each new product I try, I come one step closer to finding the perfect product.

To that end, I am sharing with you my latest find. It's Neutrogena's Sun Fresh sunless lotion in grapefruit-nectarine. The color is a bit sheer for me, but natural looking. The best thing, perhaps, is the lack of the tell-tale fake bake smell. Bonus: it's oil-free and dries in 5 minutes. A great combination for the hot summer months.

Less really can be more

'Less is more' is usually not in my arsenal of mottos. But, I know in the summer months it is wise to lighten up when it comes to makeup. To that end, I have discovered a way to keep the drama in my lashes (I'm a volume mascara junkie) while using less mascara.

Blacker than black mascara is the key. Several lines carry a color of mascara that is a shade darker than traditional black. Sounds crazy, but I bought Lancome's Hypnose in deep black a few days ago.

I've been using less mascara and haven't had to sacrifice on the drama factor. It's a great recipe for summertime looks when excess mascara can lead to an overdone look.

I am unashamedly Carried away

I'm not going to pretend for a moment that I haven't been Christmas-morning excited about Sex and the City: The Movie since the series ended. My iPod is set to India Arie's "Heart of the Matter" from the trailer for the new movie. The background on my computer is a gorgeous photo of Sarah Jessica Parker in a wedding gown. And today my obsession went into overdrive when the June edition of Vogue arrived in my mailbox.

The cover is a delicious photo of SJP, who plays Carrie Bradshaw, leaning against the legs of a man who we must assume is Chris Noth, who plays Mr. Big. The inside photos of Noth and SJP reminded me why we all love the duo so dearly. Like all things Sex and the City they are a beautifully stylized, fantastic version of a regular couple with just enough humor and cheeky behavior to make them real.

The quest for better skin

If you're anything like me, you are on the eternal hunt for products that will improve the skin God gave you. For me, that means using products that keep me clear while trying to halt the early signs of aging. It's a tough balancing act that I'm always trying to improve upon.

Last night I discovered a fantastic mask to that end. Decleor's Instant Purifying Mask is a quick clay-like mask that only takes 5 to 10 minutes. The mask promises to rid the skin of impurities, tighten pores and even skin's texture (all claims I've heard before). No empty promises here. My skin appeared tighter and softer without feeling dehydrated.

Maybe I didn't wake up with Charlize Theron's skin today. But, I did wake up to a better version of my own skin (i.e. less visible pores) and that's all a woman can really ask from a mask.

Seeing red

I was seeing red yesterday – in a good way – at the Go Red for Women luncheon. It was a lovely event at the Hilton, which reminded us all the importance of understanding heart health.

The American Heart Association event brought out a throng of women donning the day's signature shade – red – in every hue and design. A heart healthy lunch and beautiful heart-shaped table decor rounded out a moving event that included testimony from a stroke victim and an upbeat motivational speaker. The event left me wanting to learn more about the cause and wishing I had a few more red items in the closet.

Relays, marches and flings

It was a beautiful and busy weekend for events including the Relay for Life, the March for Babies and ESA's Spring Fling.

From tennis shoes and ball caps to shimmering cocktail dresses, the events all offered a chance to do some good in Lafayette.

Friday night was the Relay for Life to stop cancer. Volunteers gathered at Comeaux High School's football field for the 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. event and while I didn't stay all night, it looked as though they had enough snow cones, sausage and gumbo to last until the sun came up.

Saturday morning, the March for Babies took off in River Ranch's Town Square. The March of Dimes event aimed at bringing awareness to premature births sent marchers on a walk around River Ranch to show their support.

Saturday night's Spring Fling for the Epsicopal School of Acadiana brought out the "stars" beneath tents at the LITE Center including Elvis and Marilyn Monroe. But, perhaps the biggest stars of the evening were the well-dressed women. My favorites? Short, simple dresses encrusted with sequins and lemon yellow dresses that exuded the essence of spring.

Summer fashion hits the runway

Lafayette retailers showed off their goods Wednesday night during KSMB's Fashion Show at Acadiana Center for the Arts.

Artesia showed off summer gear including luggage you'd want to show off here and abroad. Brother's on the Boulevard rocked the runway sans shoes with great jeans. Lemon Drop's girls looked tasty in fun hues and shapes. Jo Ann Delhomme's Get Wet Shop reminded me that a fabulous floppy hat puts an instant polish on swimwear. Belle Amie sparkled with classic and dynamic dresses in shades from soft to electric.

In addition to local retailers, UL School of Fashion Design students showcased their work that varied from the conservative to flamboyant.

The Acadiana Center for the Arts offers a sleek venue for a temporary catwalk and the fashion on display Wednesday offered a variety of looks for men and women.
